ARC BICYCLE WIND TUNNEL TEST RIG
ARC has developed a high performance bicycle test rig for use at the ARC Indianapolis wind tunnel. This is the only facility catering to high performance cycling in the Midwest. The rig has undergone several months of development in order to reach an optimal solution to allow precise measurement and repeatability.
By using the ARC wind tunnel, all testing can be done at full speed under very repeatable conditions to allow small changes to be accurately measured. The rig allows for standalone bike testing, rider in a stationary position or rider pedaling.
The bicycle rig has been developed to test many variables such as:
- Wheel design
- Frame design
- Rider Position
- Auxiliary Part Placement (such as water bottles, gear selection leavers)
- Helmet Shapes
In addition, ARC also offers bicycle CFD runs to increase the aerodynamic knowledge bank of its customers and reduce their time on the track, trail or time trial.
ARC has started taking order for wind tunnel test days. For more information and book time, call 317-291-8600 or email at sales@arcindy.com
AERODYNAMICS & STYLING
To help train and encourage future generations of automotive styling talent and to understand the role between aerodynamics and styling, ARC is working with schools of design.
Recently, the University of Cincinnati Industrial Design Program students visited ARC Indianapolis to learn more about aerodynamics, the test procedures and to show how incorporating aerodynamics into the styling doesn't have to create a negative effect on aesthetics. By using both the wind tunnel and CFD in tandem they gained a further understanding on how to think in a fuel economy savings mode when designing.
ARC looks forward to ensuring your success.
ARC IMPLEMENTING DURABILITY VERIFICATION PROGRAM
With a demand from commercial trucking fleets, ARC has created a durability verification program. Aftermarket and OEM's who have their aerodynamic fuel saving parts tested on the ARC durability test rig and pass the mileage and setlog requirements gain the stamp of verification. Commercial fleets can review which parts have passed and pick the best part for both aerodynamic and maintenance requirements to save them money.
ARC's durability testing specifications allow for 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 mile testing using various inputs. At any point during the testing, the test can be stopped to check for a standard inspection for signs the part may be showing defects.

TECH ZONE
How does your 50% scale wind tunnel correlate to full sized tunnels?
Great Question. Actually our scale tunnel correlates extremely well with full sized tunnels, it starts with building an accurate model, the more accurate the model the better the results. ARC prides itself on having one of the best modeling building teams, plus we are constantly maintaining our tunnel to keep it accurate. We change belts at a predetermine number of hours of use, regardless of wear, just to make sure we are obtaining the best data possible.
ARC uses a single belt rolling road tunnel, which represents real world conditions. We have done numerous tests on both rolling road (moving floor) tunnels and fixed floor tunnels both here in the US and in Europe. When we compare ourselves to full scale rolling road tunnel we compare within a few counts of drag.
ARC's Wind Tunnel has also been recognized by the EPA to conduct SmartWay Verification Testing.
TECH ZONE is an additional area of our newsletter where each month a customer question will be answered by the related expert at ARC. So, please send in any questions you might have, from wind tunnel test instrumentation, CFD workings,to tuning your shocks. Ask your questions at techzone@arcindy.com
